The Vengeance of Mothers by Jim Fergus

The Vengeance of Mothers by Jim Fergus is the second book in the “One Thousand White Women” series. Both deal with the transfer of one thousand white women to the Cheyenne Nation as part of the “Brides for Indians” program in 1873. This book deals with the people and the relationships that were bonded in this program. You can only imagine the treatment and disdain that was shown to these women by the society of that time. Many of the women were supposedly women who were “unspeakables”, convicts, prostitutes, insane, etc. I loved the first book and I enjoyed the second book. I think that it would be a worthy addition to anyone who is interested in learning more about the U.S. and their relations with Native Americans during that time in history. Recommended for those who love Historical Fiction.

I Need a Lifeguard Everywhere But the Pool by Lisa Scottoline and Francesca Serritella

A humorous and entertaining collection of short anecdotes by two talented authors, Lisa Scottoline and her daughter, Francesca Serritella. This book of amusing , “laugh out loud ” (or should I say LOL) stories of real life, show the ridiculous and absurd in our lives today as well as a positive glance of two successful women in a crazy world! I personally loved the introduction of the book written by Lisa describing herself and her daughter! ( Lisa asks the reader if they have ever had a daughter roll her eyes behind her back. ) Lisa’s descriptions show the reader her honesty and love of life. Lisa Scottoline is a best-selling author of many fabulous thriller/mysteries. I have loved her and her books since I heard her speak at a library convention years ago. When I got to meet her, I told her that we could definitely be friends! I’m sure that she’s heard it a lot since she exudes intelligence, down-to-earth friendliness and a narration that delights the heart of every modern, independent woman alive! You will laugh, sigh and marvel at the wittiness and insight shown by Lisa and Francesca in their stories.

Three Weeks with a Princess by Vanessa Kelly

Lia Kincaid and her grandmother live in a cottage on the grounds of Stonefell Hall, a once-grand mansion in the countryside of Yorkshire, England in 1807. The eldest son of the Lord John and Lady John is Jack Easton who frequently visits his uncle at Stonefell. He is a childhood friend of Lia and the story continues with their attraction and the hopelessness of their relationship. I really liked the plot and enjoyed the main characters. Sadly, I felt like a great portion of the book was full of unnecessary subplots and banter that bogged down the progression of the story. I also thought that there were too many characters. Just to be able to explain the exact relation of Jack and Lia to Stonefell would have taken unnecessary words in this review. The introduction of so many characters on Lia’s side must have been a nightmare for the author to keep straight; imagine how difficult it is for the reader. Then you add all the group connected to Lia’s mother, you have a story that is so full of characters that I continually had to go back to sort out who was who. I definitely thought the story was too long, filled with constant banter between Lia and Jack arguing about her life or their lives. Jack was a great character but I almost thought that he developed “Superhero ” status in the end by his inevitable appearance in all of Lia’s ridiculous exploits. Have to give this book a 2.5 rating although I did like the basic plot.

Iain’s Plaid by Skye Taylor

Dani Amico goes sailing alone and lands on a deserted island off the Massachusetts coast. She is an educated woman with a Masters degree in American History. She finds an old dilapidated shed on the island and falls into a space that seems to be a tunnel of some sort. When she awakens, Dani has been transferred into 1775, right before the Revolutionary War. It seems that she is mistaken as a boy by the man who finds her, a handsome, blond Scotsman, Iain MacKail. The plot turns into an enjoyable story of a 21st century woman and a 18th century Scottish merchant. I am a fan of Outlander, so I do enjoy time-traveling romance. I also think that this sweet story was satisfying, it kept me reading and not putting it down til the very end. I give this book 4 stars and highly recommend it to lovers of historical fiction/romance.

Snow’s Submission by Kristin Miller

This book is the second installment in a supposed story of Snow White.  In this story, Snow is a member of a pack of werewolves.  She is torn between her friend/lover and a businessman.  These books are novellas and are intended for adults only.  I found the story to lacking in development and should not be touted as a story of Snow White.
