Wind River Rancher by Lindsey McKenna

Beautifully written and tastefully done, Wind River Rancher is a powerful, heart-warming story of veterans and PTSD. The story opens with a homeless veteran, Reese, who is literally starving when he arrives in the town of Wind River. A kind shop owner gives him food and clothing and directs him to the Bar C Ranch, owned by Shay Crawford and operated by three vets with PTSD. Shay instantly recognizes the problems that plague Reese and invites him to join her group of hardworking vets. I found this story to be a fabulous example of a good contemporary romance. The extensive amount of information given about PTSD was impressive and engaging. The author takes a modern topic and spins together, endearing characters and a sweet love story. I read Lindsay McKenna’s first book in this series, Wind River Wrangler, enjoyed it immensely and immediately became a fan. This newest installment will not disappoint! Recommend this highly to those who love books that have a great story of vets, PTSD and healing love.

Something Foul at Sweetwater by Sandra Bretting

Missy DuBois is the owner of a custom hat shop in Louisiana. She and her roommate, Ambrose Jackson, work in shops that are just down from each other. Ambrose is a wedding designer and Missy is breaking into the bridal business with veils and head-covering for the bride and bridal party. Missy sees a beautiful old mansion that is for sale so she goes to the house to get a possible look at the interior. The realtor turns out to be an old college friend of hers, Millette Babineaux. Missy loves the house and can just imagine her shop being in the outer cottage next to the mansion. She goes to get Ambrose and returns to view the house with him. Something is definitely “foul” at the mansion as they find Millette dead in the shed with a bloody cross nearby. The story goes into voodoo practices in the area and other weird happenings on the bayou. The story was fast with plenty of odd characters in this small town. An enjoyable book for those who love cozy mysteries.

Devil’s Honor by Megan Crane

Merritt Broussard had a summer fling with Devil’s Keepers biker, Greely Shaw, but she just had to get away from the lifestyle that she was in. She comes back to the swampy Louisiana town as a different person but she gets mixed up again with Greely. He’s also become a more dangerous but alluring man that Megan finds hard to resist. The story line is appealing but I found the actual dialogue (or lack of it) to be very tiresome and not my type of reading at all. I really am not a fan of this style of writing.

Duty to the Crown by Aimie K. Runyon

Duty to the Crown is a wonderful story about the French Canadian colony of Quebec in 1677. The story revolves around French Canadian women who were close friends with a Huron woman, their quests for finding a mate and starting families of their own. I really enjoyed this book and found it to be well-written and interesting. I definitely recommend Duty to the Crown for anyone who loves historical fiction.
