The Last Good Cowboy by Kate Pearce

The Morgan Brothers run a ranch along with their dad, grandmother and ranch hand, Roy. This book is about one of the rodeo-loving twin brothers, Ry. (Real name, Rowdy Yates Morgan!) Ry comes back to work on the ranch and runs into his old heartthrob, Avery Hayes. Great story, great author who really delivers in-depth characters. I loved this sweet story and have read number 1 of the series before. (It could be read alone). I really enjoyed it and recommend it to all contemporary romance and cowboy lovers. I laughed out loud when I read Ry’s real name. Had to wonder if any younger readers would know Clint Eastwood as Rowdy Yates on the old TV series, Rawhide! Then it occurred to me that Ry WAS a Rowdy Yates lookalike! Made the story that much more fun! Head ’em up, move ’em out!

Murphy’s Law by Lori Foster

A fun and flirty story of Ashley, a college student working her own way through school and Quintin, the handsome, loveable CEO. The two have playful banter while a flirtatious relationship progresses through the story. Danger lurks and rears its ugly head while we are treated to the continuing story. This book is a fast read by Lori Foster, sure to delight her fans and other lovers of contemporary romance.

Hard Stick by L.P. Dover

Kristen is in a relationship with a married man, Mitchell. She realizes that the relationship is doomed by his lies and constant controlling of her every move. She attempts to break up but he becomes violent and threatening. The story switches to a year later as she tries to carve out a new life away from Mitchell. Enter a handsome hockey player, Kellen. I found the plot to be unrealistic and unbelievable. The worst part of the book was Kellen calling Kristen, “Buttercup ” throughout the story. I think that pet names used by men to women early on in meeting and not even dating yet are misogynistic and repulsive. The author tries to make Kristen appear to be strong and independent but she runs away from her bad relationship to Mitchell (pretty unrealistically) and gets star-struck by the handsome face of Kellen. Really can’t recommend the book for these reasons.

The Lady and the Highlander by Lecia Cornwell

Laire MacLeod is the beautiful daughter of Laird MacLeod and is about to witness her father’s eighth marriage. Unbeknownst to all, he had fallen under the spell of the evil temptress, Bibianna. The evil woman drinks bird blood and eats bird’s hearts. She even has a handsome huntsman, Iain, who is directed to hunt down the beautiful Laire as she tries to find help for her father and sisters. I must stop here to say that I am not a fan of stories about the occult or socerery. This book was called a fairy tale so I decided to try it. It actually is the Scottish version of Snow White! I thought it was an engaging story with likable characters! It had those fun moments for me deciding good from evil characters! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and would recommend it for readers of historical fiction and those who like magic, spells and love!

Daughter of the Forest by Vella Munn

Madsaw must avenge his father’s death by going to the village of the murderer and kidnapping his daughter, Twana. Deep in the forest of the Pacific Northwest, Madsaw travels day and night before he is able to get to the location of the Tillamook tribe. Successful in his mission, Madsaw takes his captive slave back to his village. Twana is a beautiful maiden and she has the unusual power of communicating with all of the animals of the forest. Madsaw must wait for Twana’s father to pay a ransom to get his daughter back but he doesn’t realize what a hard time he will have keeping his heart out of the negotiations. I love historical fiction and stories of Native Americans so I found this book to be interesting and enjoyable until the very end. Though it was a bit stereotypical, it still had well developed characters and a sound plot. Recommended for lovers of historical fiction.

The Secret of the India Orchid by Nancy Campbell Allen

Sophia Elliot is madly in love with Anthony Blake, the Earl of Wilshire. The story opens in England but quickly moves to India after Anthony has secretly left England. The only thing Anthony leaves is a letter with a silly explanation of Sophia being a good friend and that he felt the need to move on with his life in Paris or other places unknown. The truth is that he loves Sophia with all his heart but must leave to help his employer with recovering some very important government documents that were stolen from his office. Because this job is one involving espionage, he felt that the real reason should be hidden from those he loved. Sophia is so distraught that she books passage on a ship to India. Once there, she not only has a new group of acquaintances but also runs into Anthony, still in pursuit of his quest. Add murder, intrigue and romance to this well-written historical novel and you will find hours of delightful reading to the very end. I highly recommend this book to all.

One Perfect Lie by Lisa Scottoline

Lisa Scottoline hits another “home run” with this fast-paced thriller, One Perfect Lie. Chris Brennan begins the story when he applies for a teaching position at a Pennsylvania high school using a false name and false documents. It was so creepy to me as he cons the principal of the school into hiring him and befriends three young men on the baseball team. The story jumps into separate stories about the three men’s families and continues to whip around and twist until the end. I was so on edge reading this story as it brought me up and down the emotional roller coaster. I love Lisa Scottoline and her witty, down-to-earth demeanor that builds deep and engaging characters. Her writing style is so smart and thrilling, I always feel like I need to rest when I finish one of her books! If you haven’t read one of Ms. Scottoline’s books, make sure that you read this one! If you have read her books, make sure that you read this one! Three cheers to Lisa Scottoline for her excellent thrillers that appeal to so many readers!

Of Books and Bagpipes by Paige Shelton

American Delaney Nichols has moved to Scotland and works in the Cracked Spine Bookshop that deals in rare books and historical items. Her new boss, Edwin MacAlister, sends Delaney to Castle Doune near Edinburgh on a job to pick up an old copy of a Scottish comic from a man who is dressed like William Wallace. As Delaney and her co-worker hike to the top of the castle, they see a dead body that is the person that should be delivering the comic book to Delaney. The deceased person is interconnected to Edwin through an old acquaintance and Delaney feels a pull toward investigating the murder. The story was interesting and had a good plot. I felt like the plot was very slow-moving but still worth reading as it had lots of information about Scottish history and culture. I think that this cozy mystery would be a good choice for many readers.

Highland Barbarian by Hannah Howell

The story opens with Artan the Highland warrior being sent on a mission to bring the laird’s niece, Cecily, back to visit the ailing man and his land. Artan embarks on a long journey to the Lowlands and the beautiful, red-haired Cecily. Little does he realize that her murdering guardians have agreed to Cecily marrying the conniving, whoremonger, Sir Fergus within a fortnight! The rest is an entertaining yarn of the rollicking story of Artan and Cecily! I guess that you “ken” that I loved the story and found the characters to be well-developed and engaging. This book will have you cheering for the two characters and wishing that the story never ends! Recommended for all lovers of historical romance.

Wind River Cowboy by Lindsay McKenna

Sgt. Kira Duval has survived a horrible ambush in Afghanistan. The only other survivor was Garrett Fleming, but that was a long time ago. Kira has struggled with her PTSD and other physical wounds, lost five jobs and alienated her father when she finally gets a chance to work at the Bar C Ranch for recovering vets. Kira is stunned when she finds out that Garrett is also at the Bar C but no one is more surprised to see Kira than Garrett. Once again, author Lindsay McKenna scores a big hit with her latest Wind River Valley installment. Ms. McKenna continues her award-winning writing for outstanding military-themed novels with her deep insight into PTSD and other issues plaguing vets today. Ms. McKenna’s characters are multi-dimensional and engaging while her storylines are realistic and relevant. I recommend all of the Wind River Valley books and especially this third addition.
